To honor military veterans, the Flying Heritage Collection at Paine Field is holding Tankfest Northwest with free admission for vets.

This Memorial Day from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM the Flying Heritage Collection salutes wartime heroes with parade, firing demonstrations, vintage tanks and activities; free admission for veterans.

TankFest Northwest is an all-day event that brings history alive for the community and honors the military innovations of the past, as meticulously restored WWII-era tanks and vintage artillery put on an explosive show for the crowd.

This year, three tanks from FHC – a new Sherman tank, a Soviet T-34 and Hetzer tank destroyer – will drive and fire, a rare Kettenkrad will zip about, and two vintage Flak guns will shoot during live demonstrations. The Puget Sound Military Vehicle Collectors Club will kick off the day with a festive parade, and private collectors will showcase a wide selection of rare wartime artifacts including tanks, a military motorbike, jeeps and trucks. Park

One of the picnic shelters surrounded by trees in Forest Park

Everett’s Forest Park, which lies along Mukilteo Boulevard in the center of the city, has been selected as a site for the Urban Forestry Restoration Project, administered by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forestry Program. Here’s a press release from City Spokesperson Kate Reardon…

Forest Park is the largest park in the City of Everett and is one of the oldest. Its forested area was planted by WPA crews in the 1930s. As this area approaches maturity some eighty years later, a five acre section of the forest is in major decline. From the loss of the forest canopy, invasive species such as blackberry, ivy, holly and laurel have exploded in numbers. These invasive non-native plants prevent forested areas from providing our community the full benefits and services of healthy forests by competing for water and nutrients, and in some cases even killing trees. Many undesirable plants that grow in dense thickets also harbor rodents that may create public safety hazards.

During the month of June, a Washington Conservation Corps team will remove the invasive species and a number of dead and dying trees from the forested area between the lower ball field and Mukilteo Boulevard. Everett Parks and Recreation crews will assist in the removal of a number of dead and hazardous trees.

Once the unwelcome plants are gone, the WCC crew will participate in the planting of the new plant materials for the forest to include both trees and understory plantings. The trees were chosen for disease resistance along with attempting to resemble the original plant palette, while introducing more native species. This list includes:

Thuja plicata -Western Red Cedar

Picea sitchensis -Sitka Spruce

Acer circinatum -Vine Maple

Rhamnus purshiana -Cascara

Pinus strobus -E. White Pine

Thuja plicata ‘Sensation’ (aurea) – Golden Cedar

Sequoiadendron giganteum -Giant Sequoia

Calocedrus decurrens –Incense Cedar

Sequoiadenron gigan. ‘glacum’ –White Giant Sequoia

For more information about the Urban Forestry Restoration Project, contact Micki McNaughton at 360-902-1637 or micki.mcnaughton@dnr.wa.gov. The Washington State Urban and Community Forestry Program is made possible through a partnership with the USDA Forest Service.

Everett Police Sgt. Manuel Garcia is the driving force behind the Futbol Academy

Casino Road Futbol Academy

Registration is open until June 20th and is limited to 500 kids.

I’ve happily written about the Casino Road Futbol Academy for the past few years and what once was the vision of Everett Police Sgt. Manny Garcia, is an ongoing reality. The event is made possible thru the cooperation of the Everett Police Department, the Mukilteo and Everett School Districts and the tireless work of dozens of family members and volunteers. If you want to be inspired, stop by for a few minutes and observe. Here are the details for this year’s event…

The Casino Road Futbol Academy runs June 24 through June 28 from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. daily at Walter E. Hall Park in south Everett and is capped at the first 500 boys and girls, ages 7-14. The Academy is a weeklong soccer camp where over 2,500 area youth have learned soccer and life skills from talented coaches and volunteers. While playing soccer draws youth to the camp, the underlying focus is educating participants on what it takes to be a good citizen in our community.

The Casino Road Futbol Academy is the dream of Everett Police Department Sergeant Manny Garcia who has refined the idea of partnering local businesses, schools, churches and community agencies who are committed to creating positive change in our community with youth through soccer. His concept is based on a simple premise: Youth who actively engage in positive pursuits make better choices and stronger communities. Manny believes participation in sporting programs with strong associations to community leaders keep youth focused on positives and steers them away from the negatives. “The Casino Road Futbol Academy is a success because youth see their City officials, police department and inspirational adults breaking down barriers with them and encouraging them in a positive direction”, says Manny.

Enrollment is open now through the South Everett Boys & Girls Club (525 W. Casino Road, Everett, WA 98204). Registration is $20.00 per participant and includes breakfast and lunch for the week, a jersey and soccer ball.

You can click here for a copy of the registration form.

The Medical Examiner has also identified the man hit by a train and sent into the sound west of Harborview Park Tuesday night as 18-year-old Austin VanLeuven of Everett. He’d reportedly been walking on the railroad tracks with two other men when a northbound train rounded a corner with them directly in its path. Two of the men were able to get out-of-the-way but VanLeuven was hit by the train and sent into the sound. Divers from Naval Station Everett responded and assisted Everett Police with the recovery.

The Medical Examiner has listed the deaths of both young men as accidental.

The Market is on the Everett waterfront just north of the Navy Base

The forecast is for sunny skies and lots of smiles as the Original Everett Farmer’s Market celebrates 20 years. Here’s a bit about the festivities marking the event…

Marie Brayman, who founded the market, will be there as well as former owners Tone and Inger Hutton and current owners Gary Purves and Karen Erickson.

There will be cake, cookies, live music and a special appearances by Clover the Fairy.

This year the market is asking shoppers to BYORB Bring Your Own Reusable Bag and asking vendors to not distribute items in plastic bags. They’re also working on a Share-A-Bag program.

Here’s more information taken directly from the official web page of the Everett Farmer’s Market

The Everett Farmers Market was founded in July 1994 by Marie Brayman with a vision and just a few vendors in an empty, unpaved lot just west of what is now Lowes Hardware store. Marie had the determination and patience to get the market off the ground and nurture it through its early growing pains. Old time vendors remember standing on large rocks in the rain and mud, with water running between their feet, waiting for customers to find the market. click here to read more about the history of the Market.

Port of Everett has paved the lot, added electricity, access to fresh water, and even 220 volt electricity at our request, all to help make the market easier and more accessible for customers to move through the Market. The Port Staff has worked with the Market Managers and the market’s neighbors to allow everyone to share parking and facilities in a way that lets everyone be successful.
