O'Connell

More details about the service for Trooper O’Connell are being released. MyEverettNews.com will update this site as needed.

We’re getting more information on the potential impact to traffic in Everett from the memorial service for Trooper Sean O’Connell tomorrow.

Yesterday the City of Everett released their plan and today the Washington State Patrol issued the following press release…

Motorists traveling southbound I-5 between Smokey Point and downtown Everett during the mid-day on Thursday should allow extra time to get to their destination.

A procession of as many as 500 police vehicles is expected to honor fallen Washington State Trooper Sean O’Connell. At this time it’s expected the procession will depart shortly after 11:00 a.m. from the Smokey Point Rest Stop along southbound I-5 near Exit 207. It will leave I-5 at Everett Avenue, and proceed to Comcast Arena.

Members of the public wishing to view the motorcade may do so from:

· The sidewalks of any overpass between Smokey Point and downtown Everett. Please do not park private vehicles on the overpasses;

· 34th Ave NE north of 116th, which faces the freeway;

· Along Everett Avenue in Everett as the motorcade exits the freeway.

For members of the public attending the ceremony, parking is available at the 10th Street Boat Launch Parking Lot on the Everett waterfront located at 10th Street and W. Marine View Drive.

More good things coming to Everett Community College. Here’s the latest announcement…

EvCC

Everett Community College adds to manufacturing offerings

Everett Community College plans to create a 37,000 square foot Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center (AMTEC) to train students for high-demand jobs in manufacturing and aerospace.

The center would be located inside 1001 N. Broadway at College Plaza in a $3.5 million remodel of the college-owned warehouse. The project is pending approval by the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges.

If the state board approves the center at its June 19-20 meeting, construction is scheduled to start by the end of 2013. AMTEC would open in 2014.

“AMTEC would allow us to train students and incumbent workers for the latest technology and high-demand skills required by employers,” said John Bonner, EvCC executive director of Corporate & Continuing Education.

The center will bring together six programs – manufacturing pre-employment, computer numerical control (CNC) machining, composites, engineering technician, welding and fabrication, and quality assurance.

AMTEC is designed to serve more than 170 manufacturing industry employers in Snohomish County. All programs will be short, stackable (individual credentials from different content areas that connect to each other) and lead to a professional certificate or college degree.

A three-year $888,653 Advanced Technical Education grant from the National Science Foundation announced June 3 will fund curriculum design, equipment, student support services and faculty training for AMTEC.

The center and new curriculum will teach students about the manufacturing process from start to finish. The grant also partners the college with the K-12 system, with courses designed from middle school through college with input from industry and teachers from middle school, high school and EvCC.

Classes will include key workplace skills such as using teamwork in diverse groups, applying knowledge to real-world settings, developing critical thinking related to advanced manufacturing technology and communicating from global perspectives.

The project also creates partnerships for faculty from middle schools, high school and community colleges that provide faculty with a continual updating of curriculum and scientific processes, with the goal of increasing the number of students earning four-year advanced manufacturing degrees.

Free Flag Exchange Program in Everett This Week

McClain Insurance will be holding a free flag exchange Monday – Friday. Here are the details…

McClain

Claudia McClain and staff.

Local residents can look forward to neighborhoods dressed in bright red, white and blue colors this June and July: For the fifth year, local insurance agency, McClain Insurance Services in Everett, hosts its annual Flag Exchange program June 10th – 14th, 2013.

“We started this program in 2008 in honor of Flag Day. It is an effort to serve our community. Hundreds of Snohomish County residents have taken us up on the offer to exchange their flag, knowing that the retired flags would be disposed of respectfully by Boy Scouts in a public ceremony,” remembers Claudia McClain, the owner of McClain Insurance Services.

One story in particular stands out: A veteran brought in two flags, and kindly asked for two new flags in return. He explained: In his front yard, he had installed not one, but two flag poles; One for his household, and a second one in remembrance of his late companion in war. “What an honor to present this gentleman and humble servant of our country with two new US flags!” says Claudia McClain.

This year, citizens are invited to bring their worn, faded flags to the McClain Insurance office during the week of June 10th – 14th, 2013 from 9am to 5pm and receive a new Stars and Stripes free of charge.

The McClain Insurance office is located in the Silver Lake neighborhood just South of Costco.

Everett TV Station Sold to Owners of USA Today

KONG

An old version of the KONG logo. KONG is actually licensed to serve Everett not Seattle!

Not a lot of people know it, but there is an over-the air TV station licensed to serve Everett, WA. It’s KONG – TV UHF Channel 16. The station was first licensed in January 1984 as KONN but an early owner decided to change the call letters to KONG. That didn’t make the folks at KING too happy but there was little they could do about it. KONG first tried to go on the air off of Hardeson road in south Everett but ran into multiple issues. Challenges to the transmitter site kept the station off the air until 1997. Belo, owners of KING-TV, bought the station in 2000 and have been operating it as a sister to KING-TV. Today Belo was purchased by Gannett. You can read all about that here.

Lots of choices for live music in Everett this summer

Snohomish County has announced the line-up for their outdoor concert series “Music on the Plaza.” The concerts take place every Wednesday afternoon from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., July 10-Aug. 28 at the Snohomish County Campus Amphitheater, located on Rockefeller and Wall Street in downtown Everett. The concerts feature local performing artists and are presented by the Snohomish County Executive’s Office. Here is the line-up…

•July 10, Shaggy Sweet, alternative
•July 17, Courtney Marie Andrews Band, singer-songwriter
•July 24, Money Creek Mining Co., bluegrass
•July 31, Blake Noble, Australian percussive guitarist
•August 7, Crème Tangerine, Beatles covers
•August 14, Impossible Bird, fiddle-duo
•August 21, Julia Massey & the Five Finger Discount, dream-pop
•August 28, Curtis Hammond Band, nine-piece blues band

In addition to live music there are also vendors with food, flowers and more. Now while they did feature bluegrass and fiddle as a guy who hosts a morning show on the Everett country radio station, I didn’t notice any country music acts.

I also don’t see any in the line up for the outdoor series on the Wetmore Theatre Plaza called “Sets in the West Wednesdays” nor was there country music listed in the Thursday Waterfront Concert Series.

I did find rising country star Chance McKinney listed in the Saturday Waterfront Concert series so I guess its true that there will likely be live music for just about every taste in Everett this summer.

By the way there are also Children’s concerts and a Sunday series of live music. Click here for all of the Music in the Parks lineups.

The deputy helps the man back over the bridge and onto the walkway

Early Father’s Day morning both directions of Interstate 5 in south Everett were shut down as a young man climbed onto the outside of the pedestrian bridge over I-5 north of 128th. The incident happened shortly before 6:00am. Southbound I-5 traffic was diverted at Everett Mall Way and Northbound I-5 was diverted off 128th. Several dozen cars were stopped on southbound I-5 itself, unable to turn around as the incident played out. For more than an hour, a Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputy listened to the young man who at times hung over the freeway with just 3 fingers. I was nearby and able to hear as the deputy calmly talked with the young man. Alternately distraught, angry and sad the man several times made threats to jump. The deputy calmly listened, speaking with the man and following him back and forth across the bridge. After more than an hour the man agreed to come off the bridge and as he did the deputy gently helped him back over the fence to the cheers of motorists who had been stopped on I-5 and were watching from below. No one was hurt, the young man was taken to get the proper help and motorists who were delayed were able to get back on their way. I was honored to shake the deputy’s hand who spent that time talking with the young man. Thanks and a Happy Father’s Day to that deputy and all of the other deputies, police, troopers and firefighters who made this story have a positive outcome.

PUD Expecting More Solar Panel Installations in Everett

Snohomish PUD Solar Express

Click above to learn more about Solar in Everett

Got word from Snohomish PUD today that they expect even more people in Everett will be installing solar now that State lawmakers have extended the sales tax exemption for solar projects. Here’s what the PUD sent…

Solar energy projects will continue to get sales tax breaks thanks to state legislation signed into law last week. Smaller systems of less than 10 kilowatts will receive full sales tax exemptions through 2018, while larger systems of 10 kilowatts or greater will receive 75 percent tax exemptions through 2020.

Snohomish PUD customers also can tap incentives under the utility’s Solar Express program, receive federal tax credits and earn both state production and net metering credits. Meanwhile, the cost of system installations has dropped by as much as 40 percent over the past several years.

In addition to the financial incentives, customers who’ve installed solar energy units appreciate how they’re helping the environment by generating clean energy.

“We were interested in a smaller carbon footprint, self-sufficiency and lower costs,” said Ruth Gustafson of Mukilteo. “Our panels produce energy even on cloudy days.”

PUD Solar Express

The PUD’s Solar Express program provides a range of incentives and educational support to make the process easy.

Residential customers can qualify for up to $2,500 for solar photovoltaic systems and commercial customers can qualify for up to $10,000. All customers with electric water heaters can qualify for a $500 incentive for solar hot water systems. Residential customers may instead opt for a 2.9% APR loan up to $25,000 for photovoltaic panels and up to $14,000 for solar hot water systems.

Solar Express is one of the ways the PUD is promoting clean, locally-generated renewable resources. For more information, including qualifications, call the PUD Energy Hotline at 425-783-1700.
