With the Everett Silvertips Hockey team about to start its 11th season, there is a push on to get more kids in Everett to try out the sport. Here’s a press release issued by the Silvertips that describes the program…

Everett Youth Hockey

It’s just become more affordable for Everett kids to play hockey

Everett Youth Hockey and the Everett Silvertips are proud to announce a new opportunity encouraging all local kids to give hockey a try with the brand new EYH Beginner Hockey Program for the 2013-14 season.  Beginner Hockey gives local families an affordable way to introduce kids to playing hockey while reducing the significant financial commitment the game often requires.

For a season-long registration fee of just $99, first-time players will be able to participate in practices and games totaling nearly 30 hours of ice time between October and March – with games being played on the main Comcast Arena ice!  To make it even easier for your child to try hockey for the first time, Beginner Hockey participants can rent all the equipment they need for the entire season for as little as $50.

“As we continue to grow Everett Youth Hockey, it’s important that we make it easy for all local kids to try the game for the first time,” said EYH General Manager Jerry Weir.  “Jr. Silvertips Beginner Hockey gives kids from all age groups the chance to learn the basics over a full season of hockey, playing where the Silvertips play on the big ice at Comcast Arena, while keeping the cost low and affordable.  We’re very excited about this opportunity to make hockey accessible to more young people in this community.”

The Beginner Hockey program requires no previous playing experience, with much of the teaching emphasis gearing toward skating and basic puck skills.  As an added bonus, Silvertips players will even provide guest coaching appearances to assist instructors.  Entry in the program also includes a ticket to two Silvertips home games during the 2013-14 season and a commemorative Silvertips Ryan Murray mesh jersey.

Registration for the new EYH Beginner Hockey Program is open now.  For more information or to sign your child up, CLICK HERE to view the registration form.  Visit the EYH website (www.eteamz.com/jrsilvertips) to find out more about all EYH programs.

Everett Sewage Flow map

Click the map for the latest overflow updates

Today’s Everett Flooding story isn’t much different from last Friday’s as again too much rain over too short a time caused sewage flooding problems in the city of Everett, WA. Here’s today’s press update…

Due to heavy rainfall, 12 of 13 combined sewer outfalls overflowed into the Snohomish River and Port Gardner Bay in Everett Friday morning, Sept. 6.   Water quality samples have been taken near the outfall locations and results will be available Saturday, Sept. 7.  Residents and visitors are warned to avoid contact with water at the outfall locations.

The overflows occurred at Puget Sound outfalls 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, and 07, and at Snohomish River outfalls 01, 02, 04, 07 and 08.  Each outfall location is identified by signs warning people not to swim or fish at the outfalls during rainstorms and for at least 24 hours following rainstorms.  For locations and current status, visit www.everettwa.org/CSOMap/CSOMap.aspx.

Howarth Park and Pigeon Creek Beach remained closed after the storm event on Aug. 29 when a sewer lift station overflowed near Pigeon Creek.  The “No swimming or wading” signs at these beaches are still in place as a precautionary measure after the rain event this morning.  Samples will be taken each day and signs will remain in place until the water quality returns to normal levels.

Combined sewer system

Combined sewer systems are sewers that are designed to collect rainwater runoff, domestic sewage, and industrial wastewater in the same pipe. Under normal operation, the combined sewer system conveys all of the wastewater to the Everett Water Pollution Control Facility, where it is treated and then discharged to either the Snohomish River or Port Gardner Bay. During periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt, however, the wastewater volume in a combined sewer system can exceed the capacity of the sewer system. For this reason, the combined sewer system is designed to overflow occasionally and discharge directly to the Snohomish River or Port Gardner Bay.

Combined sewer overflows contain bacteria and pathogens that could make someone sick if they swallow water or eat fish that have come in contact with combined sewer overflow.

For more information on Everett’s combined sewer system, visit www.ci.everett.wa.us/default.aspx?ID=1639.

Everett Based Non Profits to Go Lean Thanks to Boeing and United Way

United Way of Snohomish County logo

Five non profits will split $25k and get lessons in becoming lean

Five local non-profits including a couple headquartered in Everett will be getting lessons in lean business principals thanks to grants from Boeing and United Way of Snohomish County. Neil Parekh provides the details…
Five Snohomish County nonprofits will be learning about spaghetti charts, value stream mapping, kaizen and 5S over the next several months in an effort to streamline or “Lean” the delivery of services. The $25,000 in grants, funded by The Boeing Company and administered by United Way of Snohomish County, expands the number of nonprofits using the technique first pioneered by Toyota in the 70s.
“Boeing has been a strong supporter of our Lean work over the past three years. They have trained our staff, and have offered technical support and encouragement,” said Dr. Dennis G. Smith, president of United Way of Snohomish County.
Translating techniques that work well in the manufacturing world into a nonprofit environment is challenging.
“Workforce Development Council of Snohomish County was and is a real leader in adapting these principles. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to share best practices with other nonprofits,” Smith added.
The bottom line is that Lean is good for the bottom line and good for the community.
“We have saved time, money and other resources while increasing our capacity,” said Jeri Wilkes, Chief Financial Officer for United Way and one of the group’s Lean coordinators. “Over that time we have expanded several initiatives and increased the number of programs we can support – in part due to Lean management techniques,” she added.
Each of the five local organizations – Senior Services of Snohomish County, Center for Human Services, Work Opportunities, Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County and the Interfaith Association – will receive $5,000 as part of this grant.
The nonprofits will also be assigned a volunteer from Boeing to help them with technical assistance and implementation.
  • Senior Services of Snohomish County will use the money to train staff and plans to implement Lean management principles in their nutrition, fund development and transportation departments.

  • Center for Human Services will use the money to streamline and improve their billing process and create a single billing team.

  • Work Opportunities plans to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their intake and billing processes

  • As part of their move to a larger facility, Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County is looking to streamline communications, improve emergency preparedness protocols and improve the efficiency of meal preparation and delivery.

  • The fifth agency, Interfaith Association is planning to build capacity at their shelter with increased efficiencies in service delivery.

In addition to Boeing and Toyota, Lean is also practiced by numerous manufacturing companies, including Senior Aerospace in Arlington and several healthcare organizations such as The Everett Clinic. Governor Jay Inslee is also interested in adapting it for use in state government.

If you use 529 to come into Everett from Marysville at night, you’ll have to use I-5 this week. The Washington State Department of Transportation has some bridge work planned. Here’s the info. from WSDOT…

Southbound 529 Bridge

This is the southbound bridge. The two towers house the trunnions and cables that need rehabilitation. Photo courtesy WSDOT Click for a full set of pictures.

What goes up must come down. For the nearly 60-year-old State Route 529 Snohomish River Bridge near Everett, it’s the drawspan that must go up and come down reliably and safely.

To ensure that continues for many years to come, contractors for the Washington State Department of Transportation are gearing up to get down to work, replacing heavy pieces of machinery that operate the southbound drawspan.

“Replacing this machinery is vital infrastructure work,” said WSDOT project engineer Mark Sawyer. “We need to keep the bridge drawspan in good working condition for the thousands of travelers who cross it every day and the vessels that carry millions of dollars worth of goods under it every year.”

Beginning Sunday, Sept. 8, drivers traveling between Marysville and Everett will need to use Interstate 5, while the southbound lanes of SR 529 are closed from 8 p.m. until 4 a.m. Sunday  through Thursday nights. The drawspan will not open for marine traffic during the highway closures. Drivers will also experience up to two weekend closures before this $3.2 million project is complete in October.

PCL Civil Constructors will replace four steel axles, wheels and dozens of counterweight cables that operate the lift span. These lift mechanisms are showing signs of wear and fatigue, including cracks, after years of hoisting and lowering a combined 250 tons of counterweight with each drawspan opening – about 600 openings each year.

Crews will use a heavy-load crane to remove the old machinery and lift the new pieces into place. The drawspan machinery is housed in two towers 80 feet above the southbound lanes. The northbound drawspan underwent similar repairs in 2006.

Video of the bridge opening and closing is available on the WSDOT YouTube channel.. Photos are also available on Flickr.

Just in time for some record hot weather this week, the beaches at Howarth Park and Pigeon Creek have re-opened. Here’s the flooding update from the City of Everett…

Howarth Park Beach

Howarth Park beach is again open to the public. Photo credit: City of Everett

Samples taken at Howarth Park and Pigeon Creek indicate water quality has returned to normal background levels following the Aug. 29 storm that resulted in a sewer spill. Everett Public Works crews are reopening those beaches today.

Samples taken near combined sewer outfalls that overflowed into the Snohomish River and Port Gardner Bay after the Sept. 6 storm also indicate that the water quality has returned to normal background levels. Signs will be removed from Rotary Park and Langus Park this afternoon.

As of today, 36 basement flooding claims have been filed as a result of the two recent storms; 13 of those residences were flooded during both events. Public Works staff are making site visits and investigating the cause of flooding at all locations this week.

Everett Police say a 12-year-old is in custody for robbing a coffee stand and a convenience store with a revolver he got from a 16-year-old. That boy is a suspect in the robbery of a sandwich shop. Here are the details so far from Everett Police Spokesman Aaron Snell…

Jimmy Johns robbery photoEverett Police Major Crimes Detectives worked with physical evidence to solve three recent armed robberies which were committed by juveniles.

Just after 8:30 p.m. on July 23, 2013, employees from Jimmie Johns at 909 Sievers-Duecy Blvd called 911 to report the business had been robbed. Arriving officers were told that two males wearing white surgical masks entered the business, demanded and took cash before fleeing. One male pointed a black revolver at an employee while demanding she open the cash register. When the employee stated that only the manager could open the register, the male cocked the gun and demanded, “Give me the money.” The manager notified the two that she set off the alarm to call police and opened the register. Both males grabbed cash out of the drawer and stuffed it into their pant pockets before fleeing the business on foot and were not captured at the time.

Just after 9:00 p.m. on August 28, 2013 the Pecks Drive Market (801 Pecks Dr) was robbed by a young male. Immediately on entering the business the male pointed a black revolver at the clerk. He walked to the front counter, threw down a plastic bag and demanded it be filled with money from the register. After the employee complied, the male ran from the business and was not located by responding officers.

At about 1:00 p.m. on September 2, 2013 a young male stopped his bike at the drive-up window of Hillbilly Hotties Coffee Company (4034 Hoyt Ave) and ordered coffee. When the female employee told the male the price, he reached into his backpack and pulled out a black revolver and demanded all the money. The employee told the male there was no money and he took the tip jar before riding off.

Detectives investigating the cases believed the Pecks Drive Market and Hillbilly Hotties robberies were committed by the same male based on his voice, actions, physical dimensions and weapon. Using video surveillance, officers identified the male who is a 12 year-old juvenile from Everett. The male was arrested without incident, confessed to the two robberies and was booked into the Denny Juvenile Justice Center.

During the investigation, detectives learned a 16 year-old Arlington teen loaned the revolver to the 12 year-old. The 12 year-old used the revolver and returned it along with some of the money he took. Detectives identified and located the 16 year-old who was arrested without incident. The 16 year-old confessed to the Jimmie Johns robbery and turned over the revolver to detectives before being booked into the Denny Juvenile Justice Center.

Detectives continue working the Jimmy Johns robbery to identify the outstanding male.

Everett Police crime scene tape

If you know who dumped the pressure cooker, please call the Everett Police Tip Line at 425-257-8450

Editor’s Note: 4:00pm Just received an update to the Everett Police Press Release below that it was a customer who called 9-1-1 and not a clerk. The update also says there is no video or vehicle description at this time. LD

It was quite a scene at the Fred Meyer gas station at 132nd and the Bothell Everett Highway this morning. According to Everett Police, a customer at the station called 9-1-1 to report someone had dropped off a suspicious item in front of one of the gas pumps on the east side of the Fred Meyer store. Arriving officers saw the item appeared to be a pressure cooker. The area was cordoned off and the bomb squad was called out to investigate. Agents from the FBI and the ATF also stopped by the scene. Bomb techs made the item safe and were able to determine that is was a pressure cooker but was empty and did not contain any explosive device. Everett Police Spokesman Aaron Snell says Everett Police are still investigating the incident and very much want to talk with the person who dumped the pressure cooker. Snell tells MyEverettNews.com that at this point there are no indications that a specific threat was made. Due to the fact that this is the anniversary of terrorist attacks on 9-11-2001 and pressure cookers were turned into explosive devices in the Boston Marathon bombings, Everett Police are trying to determine exactly why someone did this. So far they still have more questions than answers. If you know of anything you are asked to call the Everett Police Tip Line at 425-257-8450. Here is the official Everett Press release on the incident so far…

A pressure cooker was detonated and rendered safe at an Everett gas station by the Bomb Unit.

Just before 5:45 a.m. on September 11, 2013, a vehicle drove up to a Fred Meyer gas pump (12906 Bothell-Everett Highway), opened the door and placed a pressure cooker on the ground before driving away. An employee saw the activity and called 911. When Everett Police responded they observed the pressure cooker, cordoned off the area and called for the Multiagency Bomb Unit. At about 8:00 a.m. the Bomb Unit conducted a render safe procedure utilizing specialized bomb equipment.

With the area secure, bomb technicians determined the pressure cooker contained no explosive or detonation devices and had been placed in a public area to instill fear and alarm due to the date and as a replication of the Boston Marathon Bombings.

Everett Police will continue the investigation by interviewing potential witnesses and reviewing surveillance video.

During the incident both north and southbound traffic on the Bothell-Everett Highway was stopped for about 10 minutes in the 13200 block. At this time the roadway and all businesses are open.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 911 or the Everett Police Department TIP LINE at (425) 257-8450.

Everett Reveals Favorite Street Tunes Piano

The votes are in! Amber Forrest, a local artist and children’s book illustrator, is the winner the 2013 People’s Choice Award winner for the Everett Street Tunes project. Forrest’s brightly-colored, whimsical piano earned the most votes of the 18 pianos scattered throughout Everett’s downtown in August.

“I felt elated when I heard that I had won, but also very thankful for the support of friends and family, and that people appreciated my work enough to vote for it,” said Forrest. This was her first year participating in Street Tunes, but she’s been drawing since she could pick up a pencil.

Intertwined piano in Everett, WA

Intertwined by Amber Forrest was selected as the People’s Favorite

“It is something that I have always done,” said Forrest. “I have always had a myriad of ideas, and have spent lots of time trying to draw, paint and create those ideas. I often feel like the ideas create themselves. I’m just the vehicle by which they do it.”

Forrest found inspiration for “Intertwined” in the diverse landscape of the Pacific Northwest, which offers people access to the coast and mountains. She included a Celtic knot to represent how people and the land are woven together and she also drew on her 5-year-old daughter’s love of fairies, dragons, princesses and castles.

Every surface of the piano is covered with little surprises like an owl’s jeweled eyes or a mermaid with beaded accents. Forrest’s vivid piano was placed near Imagine Children’s Museum and was well received by museum visitors. She and the piano were also featured in a video about the 2013 Street Tunes project: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYP2BZoUKMA.

Forrest’s daughter was very excited about the finished piano. “She loved finding all of the different things that I put on there. She wanted to know if we could take the piano home,” said Forrest. “She was disappointed when the pianos were put away, but I told her that now we get to look forward to seeing it again next summer.”

Interactive art project gains popularity
This summer’s Everett Street Tunes was the fourth year of the project. Street Tunes is interactive from start to finish, beginning with the commissioning of artists to decorate each piano. Eight artists were invited to create pianos this year: Melana Bontrager, Amber Forrest, Si Newland, Anna Mastronardi Novak, Cassandra Reed, Jeromy Sawdon, Cathy Tanasse and Alexander Vincini.

The 2013 project also featured ten pianos from previous summers, including past People’s Choice Award winners: The Buccaneers by Lyussy Hyder (2012), Summer Reflections by Shannon Danks (2011) and Music Leopard Lounge by Janet Wold (2010).

The pianos will return to Everett streets next summer, Aug. 6 through 26. For photos and details about the 2013 Street Tunes project, visit www.ci.everett.wa.us/default.aspx?ID=2129.

City of Everett Ready to Pay Damage Claims From Recent Rainstorms

Just got this in from the City of Everett…

City of Everett, WA claim form

Click the logo above for a claim form.

Mayor Ray Stephanson and the Everett City Council announced Wednesday, Sept. 11, that the city will resolve all reasonable claims related to recent heavy rain storms. Many Everett homes and businesses were flooded during two heavy rain storms on Aug. 29 and Sept. 6.

“Our sympathies are with all of our neighbors who are dealing with this hardship,” said Stephanson. “We are committed to working as quickly as we can.”

Claim forms are available online or by calling 425-257-8610. The city has received 45 claims so far and has investigated 37 sites affected by the heavy rains. Property owners who experienced sewer backups should file claims as soon as possible, even if the value of the damages is not yet determined.

“Our staff is looking into every claim to assess the damage and investigate the cause of the backup,” said Dave Davis, public works director. City staff will share parameters for the claim settlement program in a resolution to be considered by city council at the Sept. 18 meeting.

The city recommends that homes and businesses affected by flooding be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected by a professional cleaning company. Property owners who choose to clean their own homes can follow instructions offered by the Washington State Department of Health.

Backwater valve program

Public Works staff will also work with affected property owners to determine whether a backwater valve or other improvements would help prevent future flooding. In some cases, property owners may be required to install a backwater valve as a condition of their claims settlement; valves will be installed at the city’s expense.

Backwater valves are designed to automatically stop the flow of water into basements when a sewer is overwhelmed by very heavy rain.

City staff will also evaluate all properties within the city’s current Sewer System “M” Improvements project limits (roughly Colby Avenue to Grand Avenue and 10th Street to 17th Street) to determine whether a backwater valve would be appropriate. Property owners outside of the project area can also contact the Public Works department to request that their home be evaluated for a backwater valve.

If you see groups of people in t-shirts working in and around your favorite Everett non-profit Friday or Saturday its a good bet they’re participating in United Way of Snohomish County’s annual Days of Caring. This year nearly 1000 volunteers will work at various non-profits cleaning, building, organizing and just lending a hand. Here’s a bit more direct from United Way of Snohomish County…

United Way Days of Caring in Everett, WA

Nearly 1000 volunteers are expected to participate

Each year, Days of Caring brings together volunteers who are committed to creating positive change in the lives of children, families and seniors.

Volunteer teams, organized primarily by local companies, complete projects for local nonprofit agencies that often lack the necessary resources to tackle such important initiatives themselves.

On the 20th annual Days of Caring, we’ll flex our collective community muscle to show Strength in Community through volunteerism. Our vision is bold: 1,000 volunteers representing every city in Snohomish County.

Last year, 770 sets of helping hands volunteered 4,000 hours benefiting 43 Snohomish County nonprofits.

We’ll have a follow-up on some of the projects in Everett as Days of Caring progress.

Vapor Eruption LLC in Everett Mall

Vapor Eruption LLC is veteran owned and opens this weekend

The grand opening is set for Monday inside the Macy’s wing of the Everett Mall for Vapor Eruption LLC, a store that sells electronic cigarettes. Co-owner Jeremy Wilson is an active duty Naval officer and his wife is recently retired from the Navy. “We plan on employing four people to start, with more hires possible as we near the Holidays,” said Wilson. It’s the first business owned by the two veterans who were inspired by the success of other veterans who have opened similar stores after leaving the service. Wilson says all of the liquids used in the e-cigarettes are made in the USA and he’s excited about introducing people to vapor instead of smoke. Wilson says, “Our hope is to switch people from tobacco to e-cigarettes due to the decreased cost, increase in flavor combinations, ability to get their nicotine fixes almost anywhere, including most places that have smoking bans, and because of the decrease in the environmental footprint that these will leave, as there are no cigarette butts to throw away.” You can find out more about the Wilson’s and their new store by clicking here to visit their website.

With a 5-3 victory over Seattle last night the Everett Silvertips went 7-0 in the Pre-season. Here’s a re-cap of last night’s game…

Everett Silvertips mascot

The regular season opener is Saturday Sept. 21st in Everett

The Everett Silvertips scored three goals in less than 90 seconds late in the first period to pave the way for a 5-3 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds Saturday night at the ShoWare Center. The ‘Tips have now completed preseason play with a perfect 7-0 record as they prepare to host the visiting Prince George Cougars in their regular season opener next Saturday night at Comcast Arena.

Rookie defenseman Kevin Davis led the way for Everett Saturday, scoring a goal and adding two assists for a three-point night.  Kohl Bauml contributed a pair of assists and the ‘Tips also got goals from Carson Stadnyk, Linden Penner, Matt Pufahl and Dawson Leedahl.  Goaltender Daniel Cotton (3-0-0-0) turned away 25 of 28 shot in net to get the win against his former team.

The game was tied at one in the first before the ‘Tips scored three times in the last three minutes to take a 4-1 lead.  Kevin Davis opened the scoring with a 4-on-3 powerplay goal, creeping into the slot and beating Justin Myles with a low shot at 10:11.  Seattle tied the game with a shorthanded score when Alexander Delnov created a partial breakaway and tucked the puck between Cotton’s pads.  Carson Stadnyk and Linden Penner then notched matching deflection goals just 21 seconds apart, with both re-directing point shots from Davis as the ‘Tips suddenly found themselves with a 3-1 lead.  Everett was back on the powerplay less than a minute later when Matt Pufahl extended the lead, finding the top corner with a long wrist shot to make it 4-1 through 20 minutes.  Shots were 20-8 in favor of the Silvertips.

The teams exchanged goals in the middle frame as Everett maintained a three-goal edge heading into the final period of play. The T-Birds closed the gap early in the second when Connor Honey found Branden Troock in front, where he slid the puck under Cotton to make it 4-2.  Dawson Leedahl got one back for the ‘Tips as he picked up his own rebound and slipped it past Myles for Everett’s third powerplay goal of the night at 7:26.

The game turned physical in the third period as the two rivals found themselves at odds in a number of scrums after the whistle.  Seattle scored a late goal with the extra attacker on during a scramble in front as Roberts Lipsbergs banged in a loose puck to bring his team within two.  The Thunderbirds kept goaltender Justin Myles on the bench in the final minute of play, but the Silvertips held on for the 5-3 victory.

Final shots were 37-28 in favor of the Silvertips, with Everett scoring three powerplay goals on ten opportunities and Seattle finishing 0 for 3.  Myles (2-1-0-0) ended with 32 saves for the T-Birds in defeat.

After four straight weekends of preparation through training camp and preseason games, the Silvertips will now open the 2013-14 WHL regular season next Saturday night when the Prince George Cougars visit Comcast Arena at 7:05 pm.  As we celebrate the start of the 11th season of Silvertips hockey in Everett, we ask that you help us “Fill the House” for the opener to raise money for Housing Hope.

Silver Lake Townhomes

Silver Lake CenterThe City of Everett Planning Commission is holding a public hearing tomorrow night on revised plans for a townhouse development across from the north shore of Silver Lake in south Everett. Taylor Development bought the land, known as Silver Lake Center, out of bankruptcy and has been working with the city on development plans since early this year. The former owner, Alan Clark, had promised a mixed use concept and worked extensively with the city and neighborhood groups but was never able to bring his plan to fruition. Kevin Taylor, owner of Taylor Development told the Everett City Council back in March that the site could support retail or housing but not a mixed concept. Taylor is now proposing a townhouse development with 100 housing units stretching from 19th SE across from the lake around to 110th SE behind the Safeway store. In a briefing, the city says Taylor wants to combine the planning process and shoreline permit process to expedite the permitting for the site. The meeting is set for Tuesday September 17th, 6:30pm at Silver Lake Elementary School 12815 Bothell-Everett Highway.

SEATTLE, Sept. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The Boeing [NYSE: BA] 787-9 Dreamliner took to the skies for the first time today, beginning a comprehensive flight-test program leading to certification and delivery in mid-2014.

With its distinctive new Boeing livery, the newest member of the efficient 787 family completed a 5-hour, 16-minute flight, taking off from Paine Field in Everett, Wash., at 11:02 a.m. local time and landing at 4:18 p.m. at Seattle’s Boeing Field.

“Today’s first flight marks a significant milestone for our team, including our partners,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Conner. “We are tremendously proud to have our customers fly the 787-9 and look forward to delivery of the first airplane to Air New Zealand next year.”

During today’s flight, 787-9 Senior Project Pilot Mike Bryan and 787 Chief Pilot Randy Neville departed to the north, reaching an altitude of 20,400 feet (6,218 meters) and an airspeed of 250 knots, or about 288 miles (463 kilometers) per hour, customary for a first flight. While Capts. Bryan and Neville tested the airplane’s systems and structures, onboard equipment transmitted real-time data to a flight-test team on the ground in Seattle.

“We accomplished a lot in this flight, and it went really well,” said Bryan. “The 787-9 is a great jet and we wanted to just keep on flying.”

Powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, the first 787-9 will be joined in flight test by two additional airplanes, one of which will feature General Electric GEnx engines. Those airplanes are in the final stages of assembly in Boeing’s Everett factory. Over the coming months, the fleet will be subjected to a variety of tests and conditions to demonstrate the safety and reliability of the airplane’s design.

The 787-9 will complement and extend the 787 family, offering airlines the ability to grow routes first opened with the 787-8. With the fuselage stretched by 20 feet (6 meters) over the 787-8, the 787-9 will carry 40 more passengers an additional 300 nautical miles (555 kilometers), with the same exceptional environmental performance — 20 percent less fuel use and 20 percent fewer emissions than similarly sized airplanes. The 787-9 leverages the visionary design of the 787-8, offering the features passengers prefer such as large, dimmable windows, large stow bins, modern LED lighting, higher humidity, a lower cabin altitude, cleaner air and a smoother ride.

Boeing is on track to deliver the 787-9 to launch customer Air New Zealand in mid-2014. Twenty-five customers from around the world have ordered 388 787-9s, accounting for 40 percent of all 787 orders.
