There was an unusual Haz-Mat call in front of the corrections offices at the Snohomish County Jail in downtown Everett early this afternoon. Someone reported a cooler with suspicious tubes inside sitting just outside of the corrections office at the Jail near Pacific and Oakes. Everett Police and Fire Personnel along with a Haz-Mat team responded and after carefully examining the contents of the cooler determined that some construction personnel had put different mixes of concrete in the tubes and then put the tubes in the cooler to test how fast each mixture would cure. What the concrete crews didn’t do however is put any kind of identifiable labeling on the cooler or the tubes. Oh, and they also hand wrote in black marker “do not disturb” and then left it all right in front of the jail. Police and Fire crews say they don’t think that will happen again.

Everett firefighters cover up the windows following the stir fry fire.

Everett Fire Marshal Rick Robinson says a stir-fry dinner got out of hand, turned into a kitchen fire and then did about $100,000.00 in damage to a house on Cedar street Thursday night. Here’s the official press release:

Everett Fire Department crews responded to a reported spreading stove-top fire at a home in the 2700 block of Cedar Street at 6:20 p.m. tonight. Arriving crews found that everyone was out of the house safely and they were able to knock down the fire before it spread throughout the home. The fire originated in a stir-fry on the stove top and spread to the cabinetry and furnishings in the kitchen. The heat and smoke from the kitchen area spread throughout the house causing an estimated $100,000 damage to the interior. The residents evacuated safely and fire department personnel are working to ensure they have alternate accommodations for the night.

Received this recap today from Neil Parekh at United Way of Snohomish County on the results of lobbying efforts in Olympia…

United Way of Snohomish County’s legislative priorities fared well in the 2013 legislative session and special session. The legislature finished their work on the budget in a special session that ended on June 30.

The organization’s legislative priorities for 2013 focused on early learning, hunger, homelessness and seniors.

“It was a long session and special session,” said Katrina Ondracek of Lake Stevens, Vice President of Public Policy and Community Initiatives. “For the most part, funding for the issues we supported was preserved or even increased. We didn’t get everything we wanted, but we are definitely pleased.”

The nonprofit’s priorities were chosen after several months of deliberations and careful consideration by United Way’s vision councils, public policy committee, board of directors and other volunteer committees.

“We worked with a broad range of human services organizations from Snohomish County and throughout the state,” Ondracek added. “Our Lobby Day in February was particularly important. Legislators need to hear directly from their constituents – it’s an important part of the process.”

Here are the organization’s priorities and how they fared during the 2013 Legislative Session:

Quality Early Learning

Priority: Provide funding to support opportunities that ensure children are ready to succeed in school and life.

Legislators increased funding for the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program; made it easier to enroll in the Working Connections Child Care program and increased the number of kids who participate in the Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS), ensuring they are ready for school and that school is ready for them.

Food Insecurity

Priority: Preserve food programs that keep children and adults from going hungry and being malnourished.

Legislators increased funding for state food assistance to legal immigrants. In the last budget, this program was reduced by 50 percent. In this new two-year budget, the funding was increased to 75 percent of the earlier level.

Housing & Homelessness

Priority: Maintain funding to support affordable housing and options that move people out of homelessness.

Legislators preserved funding for the Housing Trust Fund and the Housing & Essential Needs (HEN) program, formerly called “Disability Lifeline.”

Support for Seniors

Priority: Maintain funding to support senior information & assistance, transportation and caregiver support.

Legislators preserved funding for the Senior Citizens Services Act. Funding for other services of specific interest to seniors, such as long-term care programs were also maintained.

Other

There were several other issues that United Way followed closely in the legislature this year:

Education: Although the budget included $1.03 billion for K-12 education, there were no COLA increases for teachers and several other important K-12 budget items did not get funded.

Medicaid: An additional 300,000 people will get healthcare benefits, primarily through federal funding.

Payday Loans: A payday loan product with extremely high interest rates opposed by United Way and other consumer advocates was defeated.

2-1-1: Funding for the Washington Information Network 2-1-1 call system was maintained at $1 Million.

Foster Care: More children who age out of the foster care system will be able to stay in the system for a few additional years, until they reach the age of 21.

Transportation: Legislators failed to pass a statewide transportation package. United Way worked closely with Community Transit and Economic Alliance Snohomish County on projects of specific interest to Snohomish County.

For more information and updates on these and other issues related to United Way’s advocacy efforts, please visit www.uwsc.org/advocate.php.

FF Challenge

The Port of Everett will host this event. Come cheer some heroes!

Firefighters from across the country and some international competitors are expected to be in Everett on August 23rd and 24th for The Everett Firefighter Combat Challenge. The event will be held at the Port of Everett and is expected to be a nice boost to local tourism. Here’s some information from the Official Challenge Website.

The Challenge annually attracts hundreds of U.S. and Canadian municipal fire departments at more than 25 locations and is now expanding to countries around the world, including New Zealand, Germany, Argentina, Chile, and South Africa.

The Challenge seeks to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate the profession’s rigors to the public. Wearing “full bunker gear” and the SCOTT Air-Pak breathing apparatus, pairs of competitors race head-to-head as they simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting by performing a linked series of five tasks including climbing the 5-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized, 175 lb. “victim” as they race against themselves, their opponent and the clock.

We’ll provide more information as it becomes available.

Burn Ban Going Into Effect Monday

Ban

To find out more call the Burn ban Hotline at 425-388-3508

Due to high fire danger and expected hot and dry weather conditions, an outdoor burning ban for the unincorporated areas of Snohomish County will go into effect Monday, July 15, 2013 at 8 a.m.

This restriction bans outdoor burning, except for recreational fires. Recreational fires are less than three feet in diameter and two feet high and are for cooking and pleasure only. Recreational fires must be contained within a fire pit that has been cleared of all combustible material within a 10 foot radius, must be monitored at all times and must have a water source readily available (at a minimum, a charged water hose or a five-gallon bucket of water).

This burn ban will be in effect until further notice. Citizens within the boundaries of an incorporated city or town, please check with your local fire department for current burning ban information.

All outdoor burn permits, including permits issued by PSCAA (Puget Sound Clean Air Agency) for agricultural burning, are suspended until this ban is lifted. This ban will remain in effect until there is a sustained period of rainfall and the fire risk returns to low.

With the continuing dry weather conditions, we ask that any recreational fires be considered very carefully. Please contact our Outdoor Burning Information Hotline at 425-388-3508 for updated information.

Got a press release from the Military Sealift Command about a huge ship headed to Naval Station Everett. Click photos to enlarge (It’s a really big ship)

USNS Montford Point (MLP 1) departed San Diego July 12 for Naval Station Everett, Wash.

130114-N-ZZ999-100 Montford Point is the Navy’s first mobile landing platform, delivered to the Navy in San Diego May 14, and is expected to be fully operational in fiscal year 2015.

The ship, crewed by 33 contract mariners working for a company under charter to Military Sealift Command, will perform system tests during the voyage to its temporary layberth. Montford Point is scheduled for final contract trials in September, with its core capability set installed later this year.

The Navy’s second MLP, John Glenn, had its keel laid in December, with completion and delivery expected in March 2014.

The MLP class of modular, flexible ships belongs to MSC’s Maritime Prepositioning Force as a mobile sea-base option that provides our Navy fleet with critical afloat capability, supporting the flexible deployment of forces and supplies. Contract mariners will operate and navigate the MLP ships on behalf of the Navy and Marine Corps.

“Montford Point will provide the key link – ‘the pier in the ocean’ – that will permit the military to engage in true seabasing sustainment of equipment and supplies to our troops ashore, from beyond the horizon,” said Mike Touma, assistant engineering officer in MSC’s Prepositioning Program.

Designed to increase inter-theater agility, the MLP is ready to support our warfighters wherever and whenever needed. MLP is a highly flexible ship class that provides logistics movement from sea to shore supporting a broad range of military operations.

Leveraging float-on/float-off technology and a reconfigurable mission deck to maximize capability, the MLP provides a seagoing pier when access to on-shore bases and support are unavailable. The platform includes add-on modules that support a vehicle staging area, vehicle transfer ramp, large mooring fenders and up to three Landing Craft, Air Cushioned vessel lanes to enhance its core requirements.

Notably, the MLP can operate up to 25 miles from shore and transfer equipment at sea with 1.25-meter waves and when its mission deck is removed, it can serve as a semi-submersible platform, offering salvage and point-to-point capabilities as well.

Military Sealift Command operates approximately 110 noncombatant, U.S. Navy civilian-crewed ships that replenish U.S. Navy ships, conduct specialized missions, strategically preposition combat cargo at sea around the world, and move military cargo and supplies used by deployed U.S. forces and coalition partners.

Everett Medic Travis Gamm talks with Gloria Savinski

Back on July 26th, 2009 Gloria Savinski was giving a speech of gratitude at her church when she suddenly collapsed. She’d had a heart attack that ended up putting her in the hospital and getting her a triple bypass. She had no memory from the moment she collapsed over the next three days. Today, four years later, she got to fill in some of those memory gaps by meeting the people who helped save her life. First was fellow church member Jackie Davis who happens to work as a dispatcher for Sno-Pac in Everett. She recognized that Savinski was in trouble and immediately directed CPR efforts. Davis counted out chest compressions and did rescue breathing. “It was the most exhilarating and disturbing thing I’ve ever done,” Davis said. She’d given CPR instructions over the phone in her job as a dispatcher but this was the first time she’d performed live CPR herself. Davis and another church member worked on Savinski until Everett Firefighters and Paramedics arrived on scene and took over.

“It’s kinda rare that folks seek us out and tell their story,” said Travis Gamm, one of the medics who worked on Savinski and immediately recognized her when they met face to face today at Fire Station 1. Assistant Everett Fire Marshal Eric Hicks said the Everett Fire Department responded to approximately 18,500 calls in 2012 and called it gratifying to meet someone they had a chance to save.

“It’s been a journey but I wouldn’t be here to enjoy my husband, my kids and grandchildren if not for you,” said Savinski. Since the time of her collapse she had a defibrillator put in, removed, been successfully treated for stage 1 breast cancer and never lost the thought of thanking those who saved her personally.

Port of Everett Seeks More Business, Hires Marketing Director

Just got this from Lisa Lefeber at the Port of Everett…

Seidl

Walter Seidl, photo provided by Port of Everett

The Port of Everett has hired veteran maritime professional Walter Seidl as its Marketing Director to continue to attract new customers and cargoes to the bustling seaport.

With six shipping lines regularly calling the Port of Everett, and a 29 percent growth in exports over 2011 levels, the Port identified a need to hire a marketing director to work on retaining its current customer mix, as well as attracting new customers.

Seidl, a licensed merchant mariner from the State University in New York – Maritime College, has spent the last 27 years in terminal, logistics and vessel operational roles throughout the West Coast. After graduating, Seidl started with U.S. Lines on Staten Island learning how to stevedore container vessels at Howland Hook. In 1986, he jumped at the opportunity to head back to the West Coast to perform stevedoring services in Long Beach, Calif.

In 1989, the container industry came calling again, and Seidl joined APL Ltd. where he spent the next 23 years in various roles such as vessel operations, container yard operations, third party client services, vessel chartering, regional logistics and corporate import logistics. Seidl spent more than 10 years with APL in Seattle. The latter part of his tenure took him to Arizona with the company.

“I am very pleased to return to the Pacific Northwest,” Seidl said. “My family and I have made the Puget Sound our home and we are excited to be back and engage in our community.”

Ranked 5th on the West Coast by export value, the Port of Everett specializes in high and heavy cargoes for the aerospace, manufacturing, construction, mining and oil and gas industries. To continue to serve these industries with the highest level of service, the Port of Everett is making several key infrastructure investments.

Recently, the Port completed the first phase of a new roll-on/roll-off (Ro/Ro) cargo dock that allows the Port of Everett to accommodate the largest Ro/Ro ships in the world. The Port is working now on the second phase of this project, which would strengthen the Ro/Ro dock landing for loading and unloading heavy cargoes. In addition to the new cargo berth, the Port is investing millions of dollars to upgrade its on-terminal rail capabilities that will enhance the connection with the BNSF mainline between Everett, the Mid West and beyond.

The Port of Everett, located just 25 miles north of Seattle, supports nearly 35,000 jobs in Snohomish County and the region. Its natural deep-water port specializes in handling cargoes for the construction and manufacturing industries, including all of the oversized parts for the 747, 767 and 777 airplane programs.

PUD Offering Everett Businesses Special Rebates to Improve Outdoor Lighting

If you own a business in Everett the PUD has a deal for you…

Snohomish County PUD

PUD offering limited time rebates for exterior lighting by Everett businesses

Snohomish County PUD now offers even better rebates for exterior lighting for businesses. Rebates are available for 17 types of efficient outdoor lights, including for security lighting, parking lots and streetlights. To receive an additional 15% rebate on exterior lighting, simply complete a qualifying lighting project by November 29, 2013.

Efficient lighting not only reduces your energy bill, but since the lights last longer, you’ll also save time and money on maintenance costs.

The new rebates cover a variety of outdoor lighting applications. For example, switch a 400-watt parking lot light to an LED light (159 watts or less) and receive a $381 rebate if you qualify for the bonus. You’ll reduce the light’s energy use by more than half and reduce your PUD bill!

Other PUD Lighting Offers

The utility also provides rebates and custom lighting incentives for many other types of business projects. Businesses can save up to 30% on lighting costs by switching to thinner, lower-wattage T5 and T8 fluorescent tube lights. By changing out older incandescent lights to LEDs and compact fluorescent lights, businesses can save up to 90% on lighting costs.

“We’ve been very pleased with our new lighting and how much our electric bill has come down,” said Judy Matheson at J. Matheson Gifts, Kitchen & Gourmet.

To learn more about PUD lighting programs, including a complete list of qualifying lights and incentive requirements, call the utility’s Energy Hotline at 425-783-1700 or click here.

FedEx to Donate 727 to Everett Community College Aerospace Program

Here’s some good news for future Aerospace students at Everett Community College…

EvCC 727

July 25th FedEx will present EvCC with its own 727. (727 photo courtesy FedEx)

A FedEx Express 727 freighter donated by the company to Everett Community College’s Aviation Maintenance Technician School is arriving July 25 at Paine Field.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee and EvCC President David Beyer will welcome the delivery of the airplane with a celebration at 1:30 p.m. July 25 at the Paine Field Administrative Office, 3220 100th St. SW in Everett, followed by a tour of the airplane.

“Thanks to FedEx Express, EvCC students will be able to do hands-on training with a large aircraft, enhancing their skills and helping Washington lead the way as the world’s aerospace training center,” said EvCC President David Beyer.

The FedEx gift to EvCC marks the 76th 727 the company has donated over the last several years to aviation schools, colleges, local community airports and fire departments for training purposes coast to coast.

David Sutton, FedEx Express managing director of Aircraft Acquisition and Sales, will present the plane to EvCC at the celebration.

“We’re so proud to be able to provide these aircraft to school aviation programs that are helping train our next generation of aviation professionals,” Sutton said. “Not only are the retired 727s providing essential training opportunities, but their retirement is also allowing FedEx to introduce more modern, fuel-efficient, lower-emission aircraft into our extensive fleet.”

With a wingspan of 108 feet, measuring 153 feet from nose to tail, and a maximum FedEx operating revenue payload capacity of 55,000 pounds, the donated 727 freighter will be the largest plane in the EvCC aviation maintenance program.

Until now, curriculum about larger airplanes was presented in the classroom, textbooks and on the computer, said Dave Bowen, Director of EvCC’s Aviation Maintenance Technician School.

“This donation gives our students a head start by better preparing them to enter the aerospace industry,” Bowen said.

The 727 weighs in at about 191,000 pounds when loaded and has a tail height of 34 feet. It is capable of reaching a top speed of 685 mph and an altitude of 36,000 feet.

FedEx 727 freighters, once the backbone of FedEx’s domestic fleet, are retired and being replaced with Boeing 757s. The company is upgrading its fleet with more fuel-efficient, lower emission aircraft under a fleet modernization program that includes Boeing 777s and this fall the first of 50 Boeing 767 aircraft.

Students and faculty from EvCC’s Aviation Maintenance Technician School will attend the July 25 celebration. The school, which has 71 students enrolled during Summer quarter, is one of only about 150 schools nationwide that train airframe and powerplant mechanics. In the eight-quarter, 2,040-hour program, students learn about 45 subjects and work hands-on with a variety of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

Students can prepare for a Federal Aviation Administration Airframe and Powerplant license, get a certificate in Aviation Technology or earn an associate of technical arts (ATA) degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology.

Got a press release today from Lisa Lefeber about big doings down at the Port…The Port of Everett received a $1.5 million grant from Washington state to help complete the second phase of its roll-on/roll-off cargo (Ro/Ro) facility, a project which will allow the Port to accommodate the largest Ro/Ro ships in the world.

Ro/Ro capabilities are critical to maintaining the Port of Everett’s ability to meet the shipping needs of the local aerospace industry and nearby military installation. Just recently, Governor Jay Inslee rolled out a strategy to ensure the 777X is assembled in Washington state. Among the list of strategies was the investment in the Port’s Ro/Ro dock.

Gov. Inslee wrote “Invest in the Port of Everett roll on/roll off cargo berth. This will boost efficiency and add capacity at the main point of entry for airplane parts manufactured in Asia, and help ensure the 777X and future Boeing airplane programs are built in Washington.”

The first phase of the project enhanced the existing dolphin berth to handle larger ships. With the additional funding, the Port will be able to begin the second phase of the project that further strengthens the dock for loading and unloading cargo. The port is also rebuilding the rail spur on the terminal with the help of a state rail bank loan.

“Our ability to support the aerospace logistics chain will be greatly enhanced with state funding for this project,” Port of Everett Executive Director John Mohr said. “I want to specifically thank Governor Inslee, Senators Harper and Hobbs and Representatives Dunshee, Sells and McCoy for their efforts to secure project funding.”

The key seaport project was also identified as a priority in Snohomish County’s Regional Priorities, as well as the Governor’s Working Washington Plan.

About the 777 and Port of Everett Partnership
The Port of Everett has been a critical piece of the 777 logistics chain since its birth in 1992. According to a Seattle Times article on Oct. 9, 1992, the Port of Everett Commissioners signed a multi-year agreement with the Boeing Company for use of its deep-water shipping facilities to transport the 777 parts from Japan to the manufacturing facility at Paine Field. This agreement was critical, as the 777 pieces were too large to travel by highway or rail for any distance. Since inking this deal, the Port of Everett has moved every oversized part for more than 1,000 777 airplanes that have been delivered to date.

Everett Police Spokesman Aaron Snell confirmed that a shot fired call at the Everett Mall Macy’s Tuesday afternoon was the result of an altercation between Macy’s Loss Prevention personnel and a suspected shoplifter. Snell tells MyEverettNews.com that about 5:45pm Macy’s called 9-1-1 to report their loss prevention people were struggling with a suspected shoplifter near the west entrance to Macy’s. Shortly thereafter there was a report of a shot fired. Snell says when Everett Police officers arrived on the scene Macy’s loss prevention had the suspect detained. A weapon was recovered and the suspect reportedly had some minor injuries from the scuffle. No one was hit by the round that went off. Everett Police did treat the scene like an active shooting scenario and went into Macy’s and cleared the store to make sure there were not any other suspects in hiding. Detectives are interviewing the suspect and witnesses. Snell says the suspect is 26 years old from Everett and will likely be booked into jail later this evening.
