Swimming Area at Everett’s Silver Lake Closed by Mysterious Green Liquid

UPDATE: Per Meghan Pembroke…The swimming area is back open…Crews reopened the Silver Lake swimming area at 1 p.m. after a temporary closure for cleanup. Parks crews closed the swim area this morning after they noticed a small amount of green liquid on the lake. The Department of Ecology has confirmed that the liquid is a “dye marker” used by swimmers and divers to increase their visibility in the event of a water rescue. The non-toxic dye is not hazardous to people, animals or the environment.

The swimming area at Silver Lake

The public swimming area at Everett’s Silver Lake is closed while crews try to determine the composition of a green liquid seen in the water this morning. Meghan Pembroke, Public Information Director for the city of Everett sent the following explanation by E-Mail to MyEverettNews.com. “Our crews noticed a very small amount of green liquid on the lake this morning and have closed the area to swimming and wading while they clean it up and check in with the appropriate state agencies. Their initial assessment is that the liquid is a dye sometimes used by divers, but they are waiting for confirmation before they reopen the water. They expect to have the swim area reopened before the end of the day.”

Silver Lake House Fire

Snohomish County Fire District 1 Firefighter David Arnim uses a hose to rinse debris off firefighters after they come out of a burning house east of Silver Lake. In the background, fresh fire crews move in to put out hot spots.

Here are the details on a house fire this afternoon just east of Silver Lake in Everett courtesy Leslie Hynes from Fire District 1…

No one was injured in a fire that caused more than $160,000 damage to an unoccupied home east of Everett this afternoon.

Neighbors reported black smoke coming from the back of the two-story house in the 11400 block of 31st Ave. SE near Silver Lake just before 3 p.m. The back of the house was in flames when firefighters arrived and there was fire in the attic, said Leslie Hynes, public information officer for Snohomish County Fire District 1.

No one was inside the house. “The homeowners moved out about a month ago and had few belongings left in the house,” Hynes said.

Crews from Fire Districts 1 and 7 responded and had the fire under control in about 15 minutes.

The homeowners have insurance. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office.

Everett Historic Flight Foundation Offering Chance For 12 People to Pilot a DC-3 – Entry Deadline Extended to Tuesday

If you’re a classic airplane buff or know someone who is, time is running out to be a pilot for a day in a DC-3 owned by the Historic Flight Foundation at Everett’s Paine Field. Here’s the scoop…

Historic Flight Foundation pilot contest

Your entry must be received by midnight Tuesday August 20th. Click picture for all the rules and see the entries.

Do you have an appetite for aviation? How about a taste for turbulence? If you have always had a fondness for fuselages and weakness for wings, then “Pilot-for-a-day” is probably for you! This August, John Sessions and the Historic Flight Foundation will give 12 people a free chance to become pilots for a day.

What is a Pilot for a Day?

The Historic Flight Foundation is home to a variety of impeccably restored vintage aircraft dating back the World War II era. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for 12 people (young or old!) to get behind the controls of an aircraft and actually fly it over Snohomish County (under supervision of a trained pilot, of course). It is also an opportunity to see the Historic Flight Foundation from behind-the-scenes.

As a Pilot for a Day you will:

· Arrive and explore the behind-the-scenes of the Historic Flight Foundation and all of its airplanes

· Learn about the art of aviation from one of the region’s most experienced warbird pilots, John Sessions

· Experience the skills of an aviation mechanic while taking a look at radial engines and more

· Receive a special, behind-the-scenes guided tour of the Historic Flight Foundation’s extensive collection of vintage aircraft, and an exclusive tour of the Paine Field airport and air traffic control tower

· And most importantly? Get behind the controls of the Historic Flight Foundation’s DC-3

The Douglas DC-3 is a fixed-wing propeller-driven airliner. Its speed and range are said to have revolutionized air transport in the 1930s and 1940s. Its lasting impact on the airline industry and World War II makes it arguably one of the most significant transport aircraft ever made.

How do I become a Pilot for a Day?

If you are interested in becoming a Pilot for a Day, enter a brief explanation telling us why you should be selected. Be sure to be creative! It’s that easy. Deadline for entry is Friday, August 16 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific. Winners will be selected on Monday, August 19.

I just had to share this update from the Everett Police Facebook page today regarding a robbery attempt on Everett Avenue…

dumb Everett robbers

Click here to see the Everett Police Facebook page

A male and female enter a fast food restaurant. The male approaches the counter and demands money. When the employee does not appear too concerned about the demand, the male states, “I’m not kidding, this is a robbery.” The manager approaches the counter and asks the male and female to wait. The two sit down to wait while the manager calls 911. When the manager does not reappear with the money, the two realize something is wrong and try leaving. However, officers have surrounded the business and the male is taken into custody. The female attempts to flee but she is quickly apprehended. Both are booked into county jail.

I 502 in Everett

The public hearing in Everett has been postponed TFN.

Received notice today that the city of Everett is going to hold off on setting special zoning rules for recreational marijuana. A public hearing in front of the Everett City Council was set for the end of the month but because the State has now pushed back the timeline for accepting applications to grow, process and sell marijuana, Everett has decided to hold off as well. We’ll let you know when the hearing is re-scheduled. The Washington State Liquor Control Board says they now plan to start accepting applications on November 18th.

PEPSapalooza

We’re hearing of big crowds all over Everett today as people take in events all over town. More than 2500 are in downtown Everett this afternoon for the 2nd Everett Craft Beer Festival that goes on until 7pm. The Family Music Festival PEPSapalooza packed another 2500 or so into Everett Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon for their big event. We’re getting reports that its tough to find a parking space on the Everett Waterfront as Fresh Paint is having another big turnout for its 18th Festival of Artists at Work. The monthly Everett Art Walk is also getting underway. Not only is the Art Walk moving through downtown Everett but it extends to galleries and studios from as far north as 25th and Broadway out to 56th and Evergreen. Click here for a map. The art walk runs from 4pm – 7pm. That should leave you just enough time to take in an Aquasox baseball game as the Frogs take on Eugene at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Oh and leave room in the tummy on Sunday for the first ever Everett Food Truck Festival as more than a dozen food trucks will be on Hoyt between 11am and 6pm. All in all, a great weekend for Everett.

I only met her in person a few times at news events or press conferences but I read her every chance I got. From food reviews to a fantastic story about George Perez, a guy I thought I knew from countless Silvertips games and trips to Safeway, but didn’t really know until I read her story on him. Today’s Sunday Herald has the story on Theresa and her passing. Reporter, editor and features writer. But so much more to this community in 13 years at The Herald. State of Washington Working on Stabilizing Slopes Along Rail Lines in Everett

Everett train derailment

Back in April a loaded passenger train derailed near Howarth Park following a mud slide.

Last year was a record setter for delays and cancellations of rail service between Everett and Seattle. Today the Washington State Department of Transportation announced work has begun to stabilize slopes above the railroad tracks running along the Everett shoreline. Here’s part of a news release sent out this morning from the WSDOT…

Construction is underway on the $16.1 million federally funded project which helps stabilize slopes above the rail line near Everett, representing the first step to help eliminate landslides and keep passenger rail service moving.

During long periods of heavy rain, rail line owner BNSF Railway temporarily suspends passenger rail service to ensure safety when a landslide occurs or a high-level threat of landslide exists. Alternate transportation is provided when rail service is suspended by landslides.

Between November 2012 and early January 2013, landslides cancelled a record number of daily trips. The Washington State Department of Transportation is working with government and private rail partners to review recent slope studies and historical slide data, with a goal of determining all factors contributing to landslides.

These projects are part of the $800 million federally funded high-speed-rail grants, awarded for 20 projects that will deliver more reliable, faster, more frequent Amtrak Cascades rail service. The grants are part of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act high-speed-rail program administered by the Federal Railroad Administration.

In addition to the stabilization project near Everett, WSDOT starts construction on six additional federally funded rail projects in 2013. Earlier this year, WSDOT completed three projects, including the renovation of King Street Station.

They were unsuccessful in their attempt to revive her. Today Aaron Snell of the Everett Police Department issued the following brief statement:

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office completed their examination and identified the eighteen month old girl who was backed over as Malana Lai of Everett. The cause of death was blunt-force and crushing injuries.

Detectives working the case have determined the driver of the vehicle was the girl’s father and the incident was an accident. No charges will be referred for prosecution.

At a special meeting on August 19, the Port of Everett Commission appointed District 3 Port Commission candidate Glen Bachman to fill the balance of Michael Hoffmann’s term, which expires on Dec. 31, 2013.

Commissioner Bachman draws on more than 30 years of real estate experience, 24 of which have been with Kemper Development, as Vice President of Operations & Administration for Bellevue Square, Lincoln Square and Bellevue Properties. His responsibilities included lease administration to the two hundred plus tenants at the shopping center as well as Lincoln Square, and several properties on satellite locations. He is currently President, Asia Pacific with Path America, an Everett based developer.

“I look forward to participating in our community, and regard this appointment with pride and enthusiasm,” Bachman said.

Commissioner Bachman has a Bachelor’s in marketing from Eastern Washington University, with continued studies in asset management. He has been a member of International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) for 24 years, and was the ICSC Western States Director for Government Affairs and a board member of the Washington State Retail Association.

He will hold the District 3 position on an interim basis until the results of the general election in November 2013 election are certified. He is running uncontested for the six-year term. Former Port Commissioner Hoffmann resigned on August 12 after the Port of Everett Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution asking the civil division of the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s office to verify that Hoffmann met the residency requirements to serve as a Port Commissioner. He was not seeking re-election.
